The comment, to a blogger, is the ultimate form of acknowledgment from your fan base. Your fans could share your post 500 times on Twitter and 100 times on Facebook, but that one comment that you get will bring you more joy than any of the social shares you receive. That one comment means that this person read your post and felt compelled to respond and then decided to weigh in on the topic for the whole world to see! That’s pretty exciting stuff.
Everyone wants to know how to get more comments on their blog.
It seems like I see this everywhere. Obviously, being part of the blogging world, I’m a little more tuned in then the average Joe, but it’s always there. My wife (Andi-Roo) actually has a very healthy attitude towards her posts. The World 4 Realz is where she comes to rant and if someone leaves a comment about it, well, that’s just a bonus. I, on the other hand, worry about it constantly. I know that the amount of comments you receive will affect the SEO of your post. I know that the more comments you get relates to the amount of active fans your blog has. I know that blog comments are an important part of running a successful blog. Also, even with the small amount of posts I write personally, receiving a comment just feels good! It feels good to know someone read your post and then felt like they had something to contribute to the conversation you started.
How to get more comments – Content is King!
I know you among the bloggers out there have heard this one before. Content is King! Dino Dogan actually has a great video/post about this (Check it out here – Content Is King My Ass *video below*). His point is, essentially, that if you don’t have the promotion behind your site to get new readers and new interactions, Content won’t mean shit.
The thing is, you still have to create excellent content to make your post comment worthy. So what do all of the bloggers in bloggerland do after writing their kingly content? We promote, promote, promote. We join Triberr. We start a Facebook page. We start a Twitter account. We start a Google + page, hell… we’ll start just about any type of social media page that might get us a few more views. We do all of this to get that comment! We do all of this because we want validation. We do this so that we can break free of the grind and hopefully squeeze enough out of our blog revenue to quit our day jobs.
How to get more comments – The secret formula
I know most of you probably came here to find that one secret formula that will work for you. You’ve read hundreds and hundreds of posts about how to create more interaction on your blog and how to drive more people to it. You’ve spent countless hours working on ways to make your site easier to share. You’ve commented on thousands of blogs throughout the years hoping to gain some interaction from other bloggers. You’ve guest posted. You’ve had guest posters. You’ve gone to seminars. You’ve read books about blogging and social media. You’ve spread the word to everyone you meet. You’ve got business cards. Hell… You’ve got it all!
I’m going to share the secret with you right now. The secret is just keep plugging away. Keep writing excellent content. Keep putting yourself out there day after day. Keep interacting with other bloggers. Keep working new angles on social media. If I’ve learned anything over the last couple of years working on this blog it’s that you just have to keep going. Unless you have thousands of dollars to invest for an advertising campaign, it’s going to be a hard slog to the finish line.
In my opinion… It’s worth it. Andi-Roo and I have so much fun running this blog. We talk about it all of the time with each other. We talk about the people we interact with. We talk about the subjects we want to discuss. We talk about where we want to take this thing. We absolutely LOVE blogging! To me, that point is the biggest key and it could apply to life too. You gotta love what you do.
This is the bit in the post where we ask for interaction. You know, the standard begging for comments bit… This is where I like to say things like:
So, what do you think is the secret to getting more comments on your blog?
How do you plan on increasing your interaction with your readers?
Do you love blogging too? I’d love to hear your story, be sure to let us all know in the comment section!
Do you think Dino Dogan’s hair was a bit long in that video? (just had to…)
As we all know from reading about how to drive interaction, you need to call your audience out. I’m calling you out right now! I want to know what gets you to respond to a post. How do you determine whether or not it is worthy of a discussion? Let’s hear it! How do you plan on getting more comments on YOUR blog?
